Thus a prospective terrorist can do the greatest damage if he is able to demolish the confidence of Americans in the ‘manifest destiny’ of their ‘Nation’; and the most effective weapon that a thoughtful enemy of the United States can use is the unvarnished truth. There are truths about their country that Americans cannot deny in perpetuity, and if those truths are suppressed in the everyday consciousness of the American people any enforced recognition of those facts could have a cataclysmic impact on the morale of the Nation. In August 2005 Hurricane Katrina exposed one array of these tensions and dangers, when the consensually suppressed facts about the condition of the black population in parts of the southern USA briefly became the world’s number one subject for comment. As well as telling a simple story, Fundamental Tensions provides a wake-up call for the citizens of the Superpower.
