Preservação da Informação Digital : uma perspectiva orientada para as bibliotecas

Description:Resumo: A informação adquiriu, nas últimas décadas, uma enorme importância. Ela é um recurso social extremamente valioso, porque gera riqueza e contribui largamente para o progresso científico. Por força das novas tecnologias de informação e da World Wide Web - o novo meio de comunicação por excelência - o formato digital que a informação assumiu tornou mais fácil a sua produção, distribuição e disseminação, satisfazendo as crescentes necessidades das organizações e das pessoas. No entanto, por ser muito vulnerável, a informação digital coloca novos desafios em termos de preservação. A rápida degradação dos suportes que a veiculam e a obsolescência e dependência tecnológica tornam-na mais perecível. Por essa razão, considerar a preservação da informação digital é, por ventura, mais importante do que considerar a preservação da informação analógica, não só pelo valor económico que lhe está associado mas também porque a sua especificidade exige acções e estratégias de preservação contínuas e mais complexas. Apesar de a preservação da informação digital constituir uma missão transversal a várias entidades (implicando autores/produtores, produtores de hardware e software, editores/distribuidores, governos, utilizadores/consumidores, etc.), as bibliotecas continuam a ser os agentes insubstituíveis para garantir a perenidade do património cultural, literário e científico, agora em formato digital. Partindo desta premissa, o presente estudo apresenta os principais aspectos, conceitos, estratégias e desafios colocados pela preservação da informação digital, numa perspectiva orientada para as bibliotecas.Abstract:Information has gained, in the last decade, a huge importance. It is an extremely valuable social resource, for it generates wealth and it leads to scientific progress. Due to the new information technologies and the World Wide Web – the new privileged mean of communication – information has acquired a digital basis which has made its production, distribution and diffusion easier, fulfilling the growing needs of organizations and individuals. However, because it is too vulnerable, digital information presents new challenges when we think of its preservation. The fast degradation of the media and the technological obsolescence and dependence make this kind of information unlikely to endure. For that reason, thinking about the preservation of digital information is, perhaps, more important than considering the preservation of analogical information, not only because of its economical value but also because its uniqueness demands ongoing and more complex actions and preservation strategies. Although the preservation of digital information is a task for a multitude of entities (such as authors/producers, hardware and software engineers, publishers/distributors, governments, users/consumers, etc.), libraries are still the irreplaceable agents to ensure that the cultural, literary and scientific heritage remains imperishable, now in a digital basis.
