It is to a sound Philosophy that this custom owes its origin. Human experience, whether acquired in an individual or an associated capacity, is the surest guide of human action; and they are not wise, even in their generation, who refuse to listen to its lessons. But, in the hurry and excitement of the conflict with Slavery, - a conflict which is forever changing its ground, its champions and its weapons, - men are apt to forget some of the most instructive lessons with which its past history has furnished them, and the most essential to their intelligent action in time to come. It is therefore well to pause for a moment at the opening of each new year, and take a passing review of the events of that which has just closed, and of such of an earlier date as the present posture of the cause requires to be held in a fresher remembrance.
