Description:Some of you may remember that other book: Gorillas in the Mist, written by the distinguished zoologist Dr. Dian Fossey. Or more likely you'll remember the award-winning film it inspired starring Sigourney Weaver. But hey, it's okay of you don't - they both happened decades ago. And this book has no real connection to either. The above reference is merely an example of one of the many "literary anachronisms" used by David Peterson in this his first book without pictures. Dave himself is a walking, talking anachronism, (someone who appears to be misplaced in space and time), a rather non-distinguished photographer who until only fairly recently used a (circa 1950s) Crown Graphic view camera - a film-holder holdover if you will. This old soul Yellowstone Park resort bum lifer, (as he's been called on good days), when not walking around in an early morning fog, or babysitting monkeys in Thailand, all too often finds himself in the midst of a crowd of tourists - crying babies to the left of him; would-be professional photographers to the right. In fact, many of these would-be pros, after briefly thumbing through his picture books, come right out and ask Dave, "How did you become a professional photographer?" And he'd be happy to answer them too - if they didn't almost always emphasize the word you, as in: "How did YOU get published?" And Dave may indeed be the worst photographer to make his or her entire living from the sale of his work.
