Description:Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land (Chinese Anlian Taohuayuan) is considered the most well-known and influential contemporary play written in the Chinese language, and has long been regarded as a modern classic for its timeless themes and structural originality. Created in 1986 by San Lai with his theatre group, Performance Workshop in Taipei, Taiwan, the play was made into an award-winning film titled The Peach Blossom Land in 1992, starring Mandarin film queen Brigitte Lin. An iconic production in Beijin in 2006 directed by Lai, which is still running today, gave mainland Chinese audiences its first authorized production of the play, which had over 1,000 unlicensed performances over the years. The script has long been standard reading for theatre and literature students in Chinese speaking lands. In 2006 and 2010, Lai collaborated with traditional Chinese opera groups to create Taiwanese Opera and Yue Opera versions of the play. A 2014 contest to choose a collegiate cast for a new production in China had over 10,000 contestants sign up to participate. Lai directed an English version at Stanford University in 2007, using his own translation.
