The Fipa and Related Peoples of South West Tanzania and North East Zambia (East Central Africa #XV)

Roy G Willis
4.9/5 (27603 ratings)
Description:Part of the Ethnographic Survey of Africa series dealing with the culture and livelihoods of the Fipa people. Except for thc Mambwe, the tribes lying between Lake Rukwa and Lake Tanganyjka have received little systematic ethnographic attention. In this latest edition of the Ethnographic Survey of Africa, Roy G. Willis attempts to bring what has been written about some of these people together with the results of 19 months of his own field work with the Fipa. He centers his presentation on the Fipa, but also discusses the Nyamwanga and Iwa, Runy (Lungu),Pmbwe, Wanda, Kuulwe, Rungwa (Lungwa), Cile (Kile), and the Nambwe. Using the criteria advanced by Monica Wilson in her Peoples of the Nyasa-Tanganyika Corridor, Willis very briefly discusses settlement pattern, language, traditions of origin, traditional political structure, descent, environment and technology, and religion to establish points of similarity in order to “justify the inclusion of certain peoples in a regional grouping and the exclusion from that grouping of other peoples.” Willis is successful in showing that the groups inquestion have important similarities in many of the areas he considers, but he does not succeed in the difficult task of establishing that the tribes he discusses are necessarily more closely related to one another or to the Fipa than are other groups of this region. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
