Unfortunately for a true comprehension of Jesus as a purely historical phenomenon, let alone as the religious Fact and Impulse, the study of the New Testament has in the last seventy to eighty years fallen into the hands of the so-called "higher critics," in whose criticism there is nothing high, and in whose heights there is nothing critical.
