Description:Just months after the American Civil War began the Sisters of Providence were asked to aid the running of The City Hospital and help with the influx of wounded soldiers. Recently built but already in a state of disrepair, the hospital had become a brothel and would have been torn down had the Civil War not started. Despite the poor quality of the building, the Sisters were able to turn it into a clean and efficient institution in a relatively short space of time. It brings together newspaper stories and editorials of the time, as well as data secured from the Community records of the institution at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. This informative memorial to the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods for their contribution to Indiana during the Civil War was first published in 1931. Alongside these editorials are figures showing the number of patients and the nature of their illnesses, demonstrating a remarkably low mortality rate given that the hospital only admitted serious cases. This book documents the exceptional generosity of the Sisters and their ability to run a military hospital with very few resources.
