Description:In 1963, First Lieutenant James "Nick" Rowe, a 1960 graduate of the United States Military Academy, while serving as the Executive Officer of Detachment A-23 in the Republic of South Vietnam was captured during an operation and spent five years in a Prisoner of War camp in the U Minh Forest. After several attempts, he finally escaped in 1968. In 1971, he wrote a book detailing his years in captivity entitled "Five Years to Freedom." In 1981, Nick was instrumental in designing the U.S. Army Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) Course at Camp MacKall, near Ft. Bragg N.C. In 1988, he received orders to serve as head of the Ground Forces Division, U.S. Joint Military Assistance Group (JUSMAG), Republic of the Philippines where he would be responsible for coordination of Security Assistance support to the Philippine Army and Marine Corps. In early 1989, Colonel Rowe was assassinated while enroute to work.
