Description:Excerpt from The ship rocked gently in the relative calm of the Atlantic Ocean. It hadn't been this easy since they had left the coast of Iceland. Kaalia and Pawan took advantage of this moment to look out over the vast and seemingly endless ocean ahead of them. Kaalia knew he had signed on for a dangerous trip, but he didn't realize that it was going to take him to the uncharted wilderness of the known world. He looked up at the slacking sails and then watched the deckhands scurry about. They seemed uneasy about something – even Captain Hillstrand came out from his private quarters to have a look."Cabin boy," Hillstrand barked, "Fetch me my looking glass."Kaalia jumped up and headed straight to the cabinet which held the captain's telescope. He quickly retrieved it and brought it back without a word."This weather is strange," the captain said to himself as he scanned the horizon with the telescope.Pawan climbed up on Kaalia's shoulder, his tail wrapping around Kaalia's neck as it was wont to do. Pawan did this every so often when he had something to say, but couldn't chance talking in front of the crew. Kaalia understood and slipped back into the breach of the ship."The lost wind is no chance occurrence, Kaalia," Pawan said, "This reeks with the stench of darkness.""But what darkness could there be out here in the middle of the sea?""The darkness may not be right here, right now, but it is building.""Then I will be on guard for it!" Kaalia answered stroking the peacock feather that adorned his head.Kaalia quickly returned to the main deck with a small piece of cured pork for the captain."I thought you could do with a quick snack, captain," Kaalia said as he offered up the morsel to Hillstrand."That's why I like you, Kay," Hillstrand said snatching up the pork. He had given Kaalia the nickname to shorten it, make it easier on him and the others "You always seem to know just what I need even before I do."Kaalia stepped back and took his position waiting for the next set of orders.Captain Hillstrand caught site of a large storm swelling to the south, a big one. He ordered the crew to tack with the mainsail to try to get as much movement as possible to head for the storm. The wind there should be strong and they should be able to skirt around the center to get to their destination. Of course, with the lack of strong wind, it was going to be a tough haul. But the captain knew that sitting dead in the water wasn't good for his ship, his crew or his cargo – not with the potential storm in the mix."Captain," Kaalia approached, "the people below deck, what are they going to do when we reach landfall?""They are going to live there. We're on the brink of starting a new colony on the shores of a vast new wilderness. Of course, we're not going to stay. We are just the latest in a great line of ships to carry people to the colonies. You probably haven't heard much of it coming from the East.""That is very true. Although I can imagine that they are brave souls to travel such a long way away from their homes.""Yes they are, boy," he said. "This is the first you've asked of them and we've been on the water for well over a month. Why the new found interest?""For the first time in a long time, I'm feeling uneasy on the water. I was wondering what it might be that I am feeling this way for.""Excellent. I knew you had a sailors gut, Kay" Hillstrand said not admitting out loud that he also had that feeling. "We should get the crew in for a meal. It's going to be a longer night than they expect."We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
