Description:Excerpt from The American Journal of Urology and Sexology, Vol. 3: January, 1907 Having localized a hematuria as being of renal origin and recognizing that it is only a symptom of some local diseased con dition it is necessary to determine if possible its underlying cause. For this purpose it is insufficient in most instances to confine one's attention to the hematuria alone; one must consider all the other symptoms that the disease presents and all evidence that can be brought out by different methods of examination. In a large pro portion of renal hematurias it will be found that the bleeding de pends upon one of four conditions; malignant disease, calculus, tuberculosis or chronic nephritis. The relative frequency of these makes their recognition particularly important and I shall consider them before taking up any of the less well known causes of renal hematuria.
