Description:This book reports on the findings of a qualitative study of individual philanthropists and their practices of philanthropy in southern Maine and southern New Hampshire. It examines the patterns and social structures of philanthropy in these areas, looking particularly at issues of class, culture,social capital, and civic participation. It suggests that in this understudied population there is a group of wealthy philanthropists who donate their largest gifts to social service and environmental organizations, and are engaged in hands-on volunteer activities in which they seek to interact collaboratively with these organizations in attempts to participate in their communities and give back to society.
