Description:Excerpt from National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke Annual Report, Vol. 2: July 1, 1975 Through June 30, 1976 Episodes of partial asphyxia (hypoxia) do not damage lower brain stem strue tures, but, instead, affect various hemispheral structures including cortex, hemispheral white matter, and basal ganglia. These hemispheral patterns of injury resemble the patterns of injury observed after human perinatal asphyxia. Significance: The intent is to reproduce the neuropathology of human cere bral palsy and mental retardation. Ulegyria, atrophic cortical sclerosis, 10 bar atrophy, status marmoratus, periventricular leukomalacia, porencephaly, hydranencephaly, and microcephaly have all been experimentally reproduced.
