Then, while starting his life of leisure—the only appropriate life for a “gentleman” such as himself—he decided to carry out another prank, to tease the police and to amuse himself, for “the sheer deviltry of it.” He created the identity of the “Gray Seal” and began to enter homes, stores, and public buildings by night. The Gray Seal always opened safes, no matter where they were or how guarded they were, and left behind a gray diamond paper seal.
