Murnau fu tra i massimi esponenti dell'espressionismo e del Kammerspiel, che si svilupparono in Germania negli anni venti. Dei suoi film solo pochi sono stati conservati e sono oggi reperibili; buona parte sono andati perduti, ma le pellicole sopravvissute sono oggi considerate da critici e studiosi di storia del cinema come dei capolavori assoluti. Nato in una famiglia di origine svedese, da un padre commerciante di telerie e una madre insegnante, il futuro regista dimostra fin da bambino un'attitudine per la recitazione: a sette anni organizza piccole scenette familiari con la sorellastra, a dodici adatta a suo modo Shakespeare e Ibsen.
