Practically all the sources of information given at the conclusion of the memoir of the Historian in the Dictionary of National Biography refer to his great work, and have but slight reference to the man himself. The undertaking would have seemed almost impossible of accomplishment had it not been that the writer had the good fortune to make the acquaintance of Major W. A. Chauncy, who generously placed at his disposal a most valuable manuscript volume, entitled Memoranda touching the Family of Chauncy, 1888, the compilation of the late Mr. C. A. W. Chauncy.
