Six months old his father died, and at the age of six years he lost his mother. In consequence of these events the record of his birth was lost, and he never knew his exact age. His early life was passed at the home of an uncle, who 'as his legal guardian. \tn a mere lad he was placed in the store of a frieiid in Norfolk as clerk, with the view of preparing him for commercial life, but at the age of fourteen he had connected himself with the Presbyterian church of Norfolk, and appears soon afterwards to have formed the determination to devote himself to the work of the Christian ministry. His income from his patri mony, principally slaves, was sutlicient to meet his needs for support during his aaidemic, collegiate, and protes sioual course.
