Many clever people have tried to tell us that it is something else, and they make a lot of money for doing so, but I am retired now, and I can say what I think is right without fear of losing my job. In "The Real World, a Synthesis", I show why paying attention is important, and why solid evidence is, too. So much of our "understanding" of Earth depends on theory, but theory can have its own reality, and unfortunately it can be as illusory as the March Hare. This is, in a sense, a sequel to my college Earth science textbook, "The Earth System," and it is, in another sense, a sequel to James Lovelock's "Gaia." It pulls no punches, and it pays little heed to the peer-reviewed literature. Much of what you will read here is not what you've been told, but it makes good sense in terms of actual observations of Earth and a willingness to question the "authority" of peer-reviewed science.
