Description:Excerpt from A History of Agricultural Experimentation and Research in the United States, 1607-1925: Including a History of the United States Department of Agriculture After the passage of the Hatch Experiment Station Act and the reorganization of the Department of Agriculture as of Cabinet rank, the work of these agencies Spread out so broadly that it was not possible to give more than brief summaries of principal undertak ings. These more and more represented the combined efforts of different individuals and institutions. Agricultural science grew chie y as the result of numerous small additions to knowledge, credit for which it was increasingly difficult to give to individuals. Results of particular projects in both their scientific and practical aspects became very hard to measure. To be at all adequate, such measurement must be the task of specialists, and for the most part this has not yet been attempted. Therefore, in this general survey of the history of agricultural experimentation and research in this country, little has been attempted beyond describing the organiza tion and equipment of such research and its general character and breadth. The material for this history has been drawn chie y from general reports of the work. An examination in detail of the vast mass of bulletins and special reports issued by the Department of Agri culture and the experiment stations was obviously impracticable. W. H. Beal and H. M. Steece of the Office of Experiment Stations carefully read the manuscript and made many helpful suggestions for its improvement. Special acknowledgment is also made of the assistance of E. B. Hawks of the Department Library, C. L. Feld kamp of the library of the Office of Experiment Stations, and J. L. Weston of this Office.
