Her mother was one of the earliest inhabitants of Columbia, her parents having come here from Scotland early in the last century. She was a writer of some note in her day. Miss Martin has Spent most of her own life in teaching, having been at the head of one of the most ﬂourishing schools in Columbia for some years, later occupying the chair of Mental and Moral Science in Columbia College, S.
