Die directe besteht darin, dass man die Zusammensetzung der ausgeathmeten und der eingeathmeten Luft genau untersucht. Sie ist von Valentin und Brunner angewandt worden. Andral und Gavarret haben sie gleichfalls befolgt, indem sie jedoch nur die ausgeathmete Kohlensaure dem Gewichte nach bestimmten. S cha r l in g bediente sich ihrer mit einer Modi fication indem er die Personen welche er dem Versuche unter warf, in einen geschlossenen Raum brachte, frische Luft hinein leitete und in der abgeleiteten die Kohlensaure bestimmte.
