Description:Frank Rivers had served four years in the penitentiary for the murder of his father while in the commission of a stagecoach robbery. There had been a witness that could not be found at the time of the trial whose testimony would have exonerated Frank Rivers. It took four years to find that witness, but his testimony was sufficient for the trial judge to communicate with the governor. Now Frank Rivers has a full pardon. But for Rivers the matter is scarcely ended. He wants to find the real culprits behind the crime. All he knows is that there were two, one a lame carpenter and another who claimed at the time to be Frank Rivers in the hearing of a witness. That witness was Bill Echols who had been crippled in the robbery and was subsequently confined to a wheelchair. When Frank Rivers, in the course of his search, rides into Ute Springs on a splendid buckskin horse, he immediately comes to the notice of Sheriff Jim Echols, a cousin to Bill Echols. The lawman has only contempt for Rivers. He believes that Rivers committed the crime and that he bribed his way into being granted a pardon. The only man with a limp in the county is not a carpenter, but foreman at the Beavertail Ranch, working for Lute Pleasants. Rivers is told to keep moving and get out of the area as quickly as he can. But that night the man with a limp rides into Rivers' camp, accuses him of working for Anchor Ranch and cutting Beavertail's wire fence. It is at this moment that a rifle bullet hits the foreman, knocking him from the saddle, killing him. It changes everything. If Rivers decides to flee without reporting the shooting, he is certain to be blamed.
