Memoirs of Alexander Hamilton, Late Secretary of the Treasury, From the History of the United States for 1796

James Thomson Callender
4.9/5 (30720 ratings)
Description:In 1797, Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, published a pamphlet with the cumbersome title, “Observations on Certain Documents Contained in No. V & VI of ‘The History of the United States for the Year 1796,’ In Which the Charge of Speculation Against Alexander Hamilton, Late Secretary of the Treasury, is Fully Refuted. Written by Himself.” In what was more commonly known as “The Reynolds Pamphlet,” Hamilton made the shocking revelation that what had appeared to be improper financial transactions with a man named James Reynolds were actually blackmail payments made to prevent exposure of Hamilton’s affair with Reynolds’s wife, Maria. Hamilton’s sensational disclosure did not have quite the effect he was hoping for. The salacious confession was used against him by his political enemies for the rest of his life. Hamilton’s pamphlet had been written in response to a pamphlet by notorious muckraking journalist James Thomson Callender. In “The History of the United States for the Year 1796 Including a Variety of Interesting Particulars Relative to the Federal Government Previous to that Period,” Callender accused Hamilton of financial misdeeds. He exposed the affair while simultaneously dismissing it as a ludicrous and unlikely defense used to cover up worse crimes. Reprinted here are the portions of Callender’s pamphlet that deal with the Reynolds scandal. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
