Description:Excerpt from 12th Annual Report of the National Institutes of Health Program in Biomedical and Behavioral Nutrition Research and Training: Fiscal Year 1988The mission of the nih is to improve the health of the nation by increasing the understanding of processes underlying human health, disability, and disease; advancing knowledge concerning the health effects of interactions between man and the environment; and developing and improving methods of preventing, detecting, diagnosing, and treating disease. To carry out its mission and legislative mandates, the nih is organized into an Office of the Director (od), 12 research institutes, one research division (the Division of Research Resources), three service divisions, and the National Library of Medicine. The organization also includes the Clinical Center, the Fogarty International Center, and the newly established National Center for Nursing Research. Figure 1 shows the components of the nih.
