Description:This correspondence directly addresses three questions in literary history: the relationship between Read and Miller, which has only received scant attention; Miller’s interest in the 1936 London Inter- national Surrealist Exhibition and Surrealism in general; and the Anglo-American literary networks that surround English language Surrealism. The first two are of significant interest to author-centred literary studies, and both Miller and Read reveal their impressions in ways that are slightly different than would be anticipated. The last, however, is likely the most significant. Miller’s interest in Surrealism is largely discussed in relation to his “Open Letter to Surrealists Everywhere,” which is not a document that positions him in a positive relationship to Surrealism as a movement. The letters to Read, however, precede this work and show a significant discussion between Read and Miller in response to the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition in London, for which Read was a key organizer.
