In those seasons of retirement from the immediate sphere of pressing engagements and anxieties, which were only too frequent for the sufferer's peace, there was always a lingering of the heart around the church at home, which prompted frequent letters of sympathy and counsel--no mean instrument in the business of edifying the people of God. Regular vacations were spent in labours as great, but only less harassing--as numerous, but only less exhaustive in their call for preparation--as earnest, but not as costly, as the ordinary toils of the pastorate. Had the preacher and pastor been satisfied with retaining the position to which he had already attained, he might have outlived consti f tutional weakness, and become robust through physical comfort. But he could not--he dared not--suppress the activity of his nature. His standard of obligation was the intensity of those devoted aspirations which he believed had been awakened in him by God his Saviour. At almost every stage of his public course we meet with signs that he recognized as binding on Vn'm every engagement that was offered to him, especially if it was strongly urged; and if he really could not comply, the refusal cost him a pang more like remorse than courteous regret.
