Back two years again, and we find Dale—aging now, and a member of the Army’s most secret unit—in the act of carrying out an assassination in rural Honduras. One of the targets is known to him; and he begins his slide into madness. We flash back again to Task Force Ranger in Somalia 1993, and an experience that scars his marriage.Flash forward again to Afghanistan, where we meet the A-Detachment Dale will soon run—a team that is cliquish, riven with internal fault lines, often criminal, and struggling to maintain morale. One of their hangouts is a Kabul whorehouse run by a Chinese pimp named Nanji, who is in cahoots with American contractors for a very profitable human trafficking operation. Nearby, at a big hotel in Kabul, a gaggle of quarreling reporters follows the task force, one of whom discovers a terrible crime committed by task force soldiers. Then the story takes off like the Challenger launch . . . and ends similarly.
