He later played a significant role in the very early days of the US Air Force and was one of the founding fathers of RAF College, Cranwell. During the 1920s he was OC Palestine and Transjordan where he developed a passionate interest in aerial archaeology. In 1933 he became the first man to sail solo from Britain to the Caribbean and spent several years sailing in the West Indies before settling on the Bahamian island of Andros.
