Seneca Drums

Maurice E. Miller
4.9/5 (11955 ratings)
Description:An old Indian tale goes back to the forming of the Six Nations. A great chief of the Senecas was attached by Indians from Ohio. The Great Spirit came to him in a dream and told him what to do. While he fasted, squaws built a great drum. His fasting ended, he mounted to the top of the ridge between Cayuga and Seneca lakes and beat the drum, thus summoning all the Indian tribes that he welded into the Iroquois Confederacy. At his death he was set adrift in Seneca Lake in a dugout with the great drum beside him. Since then, every now and then, the beat of the drum is heard, coming from the depths of the lake. Perhaps it was the call of that drum that drew the progeny of John Dunlap to the Finger Lakes region. After the American Revolution, the old Scotsman who had be a stalwart supporter of Washington, found his lands on the banks of the Delaware forfeit because his title was what was known as a “King’s Grant.” Recourse to law availed him nothing. It was then that the Dunlaps started their travels north into a wilderness where no white men lived. Seneca Drums is fictionalized, but it is closely knit to history. The Dunlaps were real people; painstaking research has made their odyssey a factual joy without detracting from its breathtaking excitement. The enemies the family faced were bred in the vagaries of the seasons and the terrain, in the denizens of the forests, and in the hearts of evil men.
