There exist memorandums from as far back as the year 1672 about the candidates who were considered to have a chance of securing the triple crown, though several of their number had died in the meantime and others, who were not mentioned then, had since come into the foreground. It was impossible to make a sure prophecy about any of the many candidates, for none of the parties disposed of the power of exclusion and still less of that of inclusion; hence it was necessary to reckon with a long conclave.
