The proportions of so formidablep a work would preclude its publication, and Were it indeed possible, such a work could serve no serious purpose in the general plan of utility. It was plainly demonstrated that the pr oected task must either be abandoned or greatly abridged. That portion 0? The task which could be most readily detached and wron ht into unity was the catalogue of those works that woulda to be of egreatest interest to the collector or the student of C ornia history in its broader sense.
