Description:Excerpt from Tenth Annual Report of the Directors of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, to the Stockholders: February 2d, 1857Since the repeal of the tonnage duty on coal, the transporta tion of the bituminous variety, which abounds along the line of our road, has become an important branch of the Company's business. In consequence of the distance of the mines from the seaboard, the charges for freight must necessarily be light, to permit its introduction to market in competition with that brought from the mines of Maryland and Virginia, from whence most of this description of coal, consumed in Philadelphia, has heretofore been obtained. The rate charged for its transportation is deemed profitable only in connection with other business, and with a view of keeping the rolling stock of the Company fully employed, during that portion of the year when there is a scarcity of freight of other descriptions. -after' the superior quality of the coal of the region traversed by our road shall have been fully established, it is believed it will command a price in' the market such as to afford more remunerative rates of freight.
