Description:Captain Allen Gardiner (1794-1851) worked as a pioneer missionary to indigenous populations in present-day South Africa, Chile, and Argentina. When no major missions agency would support his work for South American indigenous peoples, he founded his own missions agency on their behalf, and used his maritime and survival skills to start a work in Patagonia. He was stranded in 1850 and died with a crew of six on a remote island in Tierra del Fuego. He left as his legacy a mission station in Port Natal, South Africa (now Durban), and the Patagonian Mission, which later became the South American Mission. His son also followed him in the same mission field.
