A Jacobite Exile

Unknown Author
4.9/5 (10741 ratings)
Description:This is the story of a Banffshire Soldier of 1745, forced to remain for eleven years on the continent, after taking part in the disastrous campaign which ended at Culloden. The source of the story is a collection of letters between the Jacobite and his Mother, for whom he has a romantic devotion ; these letters were carefully preserved by each through many vicissitudes, and are still in the hands of the family. The exile, Andrew Hay, was a man of remarkable appearance, being 7 foot 2 inches in height ; he struck terror into the hearts of the inhabitants of Manchester when he marched into the town at the head of the highland army. His great size made him also a very difficult fugitive to conceal. The picture of the life led in the second half of the eighteenth century, by numbers of Scotsmen who had lost their all in Prince Charles' service and had to drag out a melancholy existence in the little towns of France and the Low Countries, is full of pathos a d not without humour. Sometimes they were reduced to one meal a day but when the sun of fortune smiled upon them, they smuggled home foreign wines to their families! We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
