Description:Thomas Joseph Donleavy was born on July 21, 1928, in Holy Family Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. He often referred to himself as a provocateur, one who causes dissension in others so they behave in ways they would not do ordinarily. As a child, he heated his crayons on the stove so as to mold them into sculptures. He refused to go to kindergarten, but he eventually went on to attend Saint Barnabas Elementary School in Woodlawn, the Bronx, New York. He graduated from Manhattan Preparatory School, Riverdale, New York. He went for a short while to the City College of the City University of New York and later attended Mount St. Marys College in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He attended the Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania, founded by Dr. Albert C. Barnes and went on to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where he actually taught classes in sculpture. He particularly valued the art books he owned written by Violette de Mazia, who worked with Dr. Barnes. TJ worked at a variety of jobs over the years. He clerked in a grocery store, worked at a gas station, sold cemetery plots, made sandwiches for Connecticut Box Lunch Company, did printing work at Printer Wick, Scarsdale, New York. He was very involved with his family. He cared for both his mother and father in their final years and drove my children to school and myself when necessary. In 1960, he traveled to Italy with his friend Bernard Kozahowski, who had been awarded a scholarship by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Traveling through Europe, he ended up in the Republic of Ireland. He then lived in Carriglea, the family home in Greystones, County Wicklow, for six years where he made drawings and pastels. Throughout his life, TJ played the piano, creating concertos of extraordinary beauty. Most important of all, he was uncle and mentor to Benjamin Patrick Brown, son of Marita OHare, his beloved niece, and was brother to me, his sister Mary Rita Donleavy. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
