While he earned his living as a clerk, he wrote poems and stories, many sympathetic to the Basque soul and his longing for the landscape of northern Spain. His first collection of lyrics, the Libro de los cantares in 1852, enhanced his popularity and his charming tales convinced Queen Isabella II to appoint him historiographer of the Biscayan district.
