Nuclear Brinkmanship: Challenges for the Trump Presidency

Alexander Devolpi
4.9/5 (33337 ratings)
Description:When Donald J. Trump, a businessman and TV personality . was sworn in as President of the United States on 20 January 2017, he introduced an agenda and style much different than his predecessors . He also inherited many challenges, not the least being a potentially eruptive state of nuclear issues with North Korea. As President, he has sole responsibility over control of the nuclear “football,” a means inherited from the Cold War for launching a retaliatory nuclear strike that would incinerate and irradiate entire metropolitan areas of an adversary nation. Indeed, such fateful orders were given and carried out to hasten World War II’s end by destroying Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Something similar, or much worse, wasn’t far from happening less than two decades later during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. Recollections in this book demonstrate how difficult it was during the Cold War to contain the nuclear-arms race as it grew ever more alarming, more expensive, and more consequential. This book reminds us of that half-century in nuclear crisis, shifting from one global instability to another with rapidly changing circumstances, incidents, accidents, and personalities. I’m able to recall and remind us of those nerve-wracking situations, having been an insider nuclear physicist, as well as an informed and experienced anti-war, civil- rights activist. After graduating from college with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, I served on active military duty as a commissioned officer in the Navy, partly during the Korean War. Afterwards, attending graduate school under the GI Bill, I retrofitted to become a PhD physicist. By entering the esoteric domains of nuclear reactors and weapons, my professional career lead to contact with many around the world trying to control nuclear armaments. Derived largely from personal files, this book is supplemented by historical records, providing a comprehensive first-hand account of the convulsive Cold War era as its consequences carry over to the Trump presidency. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
