In this Charge it is asserted that "the newspaper press of America is accessory to thousands of murders every year by assisting quack doctors, or patent-medicine-men, to make extensive sales of their pernicious compounds." According to a rule laid down in another part of this work, "we can have no better evidence than the voluntary confessions of the criminal, or of his confederates." In this case, the quack doctors are the accused parties, and the journalists (as we shall see presently) are their self-accused confederates. I am about to offer you the testimony, or confession, of the "New York Journalist" who wrote the Life of J. G. Bennett, and who appears to be thoroughly acquainted with all the shady recesses and tortuous pathways of journalism. Says this faithful "The press is Extensively used, and, horribile dictu, it is used Editorially, in some cases, by the proprietors of patent medicines, until the evil is about to be checked by a resort to legislation.
