Description:Author's preface: The author's object in writing this book is to glorify God by riveting the reader's attention to some of the great spiritual truths so vividly illustrated by the history of Israel during the period under consideration. The line of thought here pursued has been helpful to him and those to whom it has been orally presented, and he trusts it may be still more richly blessed in this form. Scriptural warrant for seeking practical lessons in this way may be found in many places. Referring to these truths, "it is written" in Psalms 78:5-8: "For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers that they should make them known to their children: that the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them unto their children: that they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments: and might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not steadfast with God." Also, in 1 Corinthians 10:6: "Now these things were our examples to the intent we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted." And verse 11 of the same chapter declares: "Now all these things happened unto them for examples, and they are written for our admonition." If the writer can help any to study and heed the tragical and heroic ensamples there recorded he will feel that he has not written in vain. He is aware that others have written ably upon this subject, and is not so vain as to suppose he can excel them, but writes to exercise that "power for good" alluded to by the saintly and venerable Bishop Janes when he said: "Every man has his circle of influence; each author on this subject will secure some readers that would not give attention to the writings of others. Here is a power for good that ought not to be lost." It is humbly hoped that this book may be like a lamp, and the truths herein like the light from it, and that the reader will be so charmed by the radiance of the light that any defects in the lamp may thus be in a measure atoned for. Eleven years later, in 1888, he founded the magazine God’s Revivalist.
