Highland Imperialist & Knight of India: Hector Munro of Novar (1727 - 1806)

Stuart McCabe
4.9/5 (22400 ratings)
Description:Sir Hector Munro of Novar; is a person not well known in Scottish history, yet during the Hanoverian period he is a figure that played a significant part in helping expand British imperial interests in India, and at home promote the agricultural and farming revolution of improvement which would drastically transform the culture of the Highlands. Like many Highlanders he fought on the side of George II against the Jacobites, and post-Culloden he sought employment as a soldier in the British Empire. He would become a key-player in the multi-national East India Company, a soldier who rode luck and opportunity to score impressive and important victories against Britain's enemies and rival. He even negotiated terms with a Emperor after winning one of the most decisive battles in Indian history. He won two important sieges against the French and Dutch, and fought several brutal battles against native princes, and gained a reputation as a ruthless man, especially in a savage suppression of a native mutiny of sepoy. At home he would use his vast fortune to expand his own empire, acquired through aggressive land-acquisition and politics. He would enter the arena of a political system that relied on patronage and corruption, and he would rise to the top, sitting as a Member of Parliament for over thirty years. He understood that the greatest source of patronage was the King of Great Britain, and whether in domestic politics or in controversial foreign policy such as war in America, Munro would place his resources and energy in support of King George III. He was a major promoter of the raising of Scottish regiments to fight wars of Empire, understanding that this gave Scotland a important lever with King and government, and like many Highland chiefs and soldiers he would promote Highland and Gaelic culture through his support of the Highland Societies of Scotland and London, where songs, music, poems, highland dress, traditions and culture were preserved and protected. Munro was one of the first to introduce the modern ideas of farming and agriculture that would contribute to the Highland Clearances, where whole communities would be replace by economies based on sheep farming. In one infamous incident he used military force to suppress a rising by crofters and cattlemen. He also promoted modernisation of roads and bridges across Scotland, transforming communications and communities in the Highlands. This work seeks to examine events in Scotland during the reigns of George II and George III, through the life of Hector Munro, and narrates the complex politics of India, and the complexity of Highland Scotland's role in Empire. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
