This guidebook covers the central section of Shenandoah Mountain between Rt. 33 and Rt. 250 in western Rockingham and Augusta Counties. This large wild area has a network of over 150 miles of trails, many of which were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). These trails offer an exceptional hiking experience in terms of scenic beauty, challenge, rich diversity of plants and wildlife, and the opportunity to find solitude. The central section of Shenandoah Mountain west of Staunton and Harrisonburg is one of the largest, most unfragmented areas of mature forest in the Eastern United States. It contains five National Forest Roadless Areas, including Little River, which at 29,000 areas us the largest on National Forest land east of the Mississippi.
