Joan of Arc on the Twentieth Century Stage: Dramatic Treatment of the Joan of Arc Story by Bertolt Brecht, George Bernard Shaw, Jean Anouilh, Georg Kaiser, Paul Claudel, and Maxwell Anderson
Description:A dissertation submitted to the graduate school in fulfillment of the requirement for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Field of German. From the Preface:The strange, haunting, almost incredible story of Joan of Arc has had a perennial fascination for historians, dramatists, novelists, and poets as well as for their readers and indeed for the common man. This story has meant many things to many men, but that it has no exact counterpart in history can hardly be disputed. The uniqueness of the case, its abiding quality of the enigmatic and mysterious, plus the courage, genius, and tragedy of the heroine herself all contribute to the making of this timeless and universally appealing story. One further element present in the tale is particularly important for the purposes of the current study. The framework fo the story of a young, uneducated, innocent peasant girl confronting the highest representatives of worldly and spiritual power of her day has been seen as one which could be fit to the demands of all manner of social criticism. Joan has been cast as a resistance fighter in Vichy France, and a Salvation Army lass in Chicago; she has been used as the mouthpiece for French nationalism and for international Socialism; she has spoken as an anti-clericalist, an anti-Catholic, an atheist, a humanist, and a Catholic. She has challenged the class system, the capitalist economic system, the authority of the church over the individual soul, and the unquestioning acceptance of traditional values of society.[...]Through an examination of many treatments of one historical topic one can see what each playwright is attempting dramatically and can also make judgements as to how dramatically effective any given play is and to what extent it realizes the goals aimed at by its author. The primary aim of this study, then, is to analyze critically several dramatic treatments of the Joan of Arc story in order to gain an understanding of how drama can function as political, social, and cultural criticism. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
