Poemas Sueltos/ Free Poems

Description:To translate a work of poetry from one language to another, is a challenge like almost no other. It requires not just a literal direct interpretation of the author’s words, but also very often an immersion into the author’s mind, heart, and soul; in order to uncover not just the words but the nuances of larger context. It was an honor to be asked to do the translation work for this esteemed writer; more, to be asked to write this little introduction. Sr. Oscar Soto is a professional of highest caliber; and his poetry reflects his lifetime of experience as a historian, human rights advocate, cultural leader, journalist, and environmentalist in our city. He has a keen insight into the story behind small details, and that eye for story is evident in the manner through which he approaches his creative art. You will find poems here about what Don Quixote was thinking as he rode across the desert; why opening a bottle of water might provoke a revolt; what it means to come to terms with the messy parts of life we would rather drown in the ocean and forget about; and reconciliation with a love. In this translation, I did my best to stay true to the source material, and worked closely on the final redaction with the highly esteemed fellow translator, writer and poet Nancy Ruiz Lee. You will see some instances where the translation from Spanish to English is not 100% word for word; where we changed the order of the sentence; selected a different word or phrase; or otherwise altered the literal phrasing in order to, we hope, capture and expound upon the larger context and clarity of message, intent, and spirit of Sr. Soto’s work. Whatever translation errors remain, are mine and mine alone. Marie Anzalonethis version is bilingual in English and SpanishWe have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
