A Causton Family in East Essex Since the Fourteenth Century

John Causton
4.9/5 (30425 ratings)
Description:This account of a Causton family in East Essex has been traced using many sources such as wills, deeds, parish records, manorial rolls and civil court proceedings. The work was made more difficult by much variation in early spelling of the Causton surname and the family fondness for the name John. The first record of the family starts at around 1380 with a John Causton in Purleigh in the Dengie Peninsula. Branches of the family continue in the Dengie peninsula until the 16th century and include a Thomas Causton who was martyred in 1555 for his Protestant beliefs.About 1500 two descendants both called John Causton move to Tollesbury and Layer Marney in Thurstable Hundred across the river Blackwater. Apart from brief periods in Great Yeldham and Wormingford the family continued living in Great Clacton from about 1550 up to the nineteenth century. A philip Causton accumulated a fair sized estate of 250 acres in Great Clacton by 1730 but he was not above some shady dealings. The estate included Burrs Farm and Three Chimneys. The estate passed out of the family when Philip Cuaston left the estate to his only child Mary. Her uncle Thomas Causton continued the Causton family line as a yeoman at Pearls Farm or Treasure Hold, a place renowned for smuggling. The family gradually became poorer and three generations later a John Causton ended up as an agricultural laborer. He went to gaol for a year when he became involved in the machine breaking riots of 1830. Subsequent generations included a master mariner and a shipwright. When William Harry Causton, a shipwright, died in 1944 the Causton family is known to have been living in east Essex for over six hundred and fifty years. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
