Description:Don S. Gentile emerged from the Second World War as one of the top American fighter aces in Europe. Turned down by the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) in the summer of 1941, Gentile went on to join the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). He completed his training with the RCAF in Britain during the latter half of 1941 and the early part of 1942. Gentile was posted to No. 133 Squadron, one of 3 fighter squadrons (with mainly American pilots - known collectively as the Eagle Squadrons) attached to the Royal Air Force (RAF). Flying the Supermarine Spitfire, Gentile scored his first 2 kills (a FW 190 fighter and a Junkers 88 bomber) on August 19th, 1942 over Dieppe, France during Operation Jubilee. Before the end of the year, No. 133 Squadron and the 2 other Eagle Squadrons in the RAF were transferred to the USAAF, where they were redesignated as the 4th Fighter Group. Throughout 1943 and into February 1944, Gentile and the 4th Fighter Group flew the P-47 Thunderbolt in combat. Once the 4th Fighter Group transitioned to the P-51 Mustang, Gentile came into his own as a fighter pilot, scoring 15.5 victories between March 3 and April 8, 1944. He was then sent back to the United States on a tour selling war bonds. His official victory tally was 23.88 aerial victories.Gentile continued in the Air Force postwar, serving as a test pilot.
