Description:THE aim of this book is to provide training in the appreciation of prose written from the fifteenth century to the present day. The training is based on a series of passages, each followed by questions which seek to encourage careful and intelligent reading. A commentary is provided which out- lines very briefly the social and literary background of the prose of each century, and short biographical notes on the authors are also included. The chronological arrangement of the passages should help the student to follow the development of English prose from early times. Traditional terms such as Eliza- bethan, Jacobean, and Augustan are avoided since they are often vague or even ambiguous; the division into centuries, if obviously artificial and arbitrary, is at least clear- cut and convenient. The authors selected are those who are generally ac- knowlged to be the oustanding prose-writers of their time, writers who, having something interesting to say, have said it in memorable prose. Sometimes an author is represented by more than one passage, either to illustrate the variety of his writing, as with Bacon, or to show the change in his style from the early period to the later, as with Dr. Johnson.
