Description:There were two major happenings in Blackpool in 1893. The edifice that now represents Blackpool all over the world, Blackpool Tower, was being built and on the sporting front a major coup was achieved when the eighth Australian touring side came to town. The Tower was topped in September of that year, one month after the Australian tourists had played, and defeated, XVI of Blackpool at the newly opened Blackpool Athletics Grounds, off Whitegate Drive. Prior to then there was no purpose-built sports stadium in the town and both the cricket and football clubs shared facilities at the Raikes Hall Pleasure Gardens, a town centre amusement park. Early in the year a group of businessmen decided that it was time that 'the Brighton of the north' had a sports ground to rival those elsewhere in the country. Land was purchased, a ground was developed and an ambitious official opening saw the eighth Australians invited.
