They are surprised by a cavalry troop, and during the battle, a blow knocks the Prince out. When the battle ends, Zaan is a prisoner, and a Roman Tribune is badly wounded. The Tribune is ordered back to Rome for recuperation. Before leaving, he requests permission to take the new slave as a gift to his son at his Coming of Age ceremony. The next day, the Tribune, legionnaire escort, doctor, and the new slave head south for Rome. Meanwhile, in Rome, Lucius, a young Patrician, waits for his Toga Ceremony. Unfortunately, shortly after arriving in Rome, his father slips into a coma and dies. Because of this, young Lucius becomes the paterfamilias over 16 slaves and his mother. He soon discovers his family is short on wealth and income. In truth, they are barely able to remain listed on the Patrician rolls. Desperate, Lucius turns to his new slave, who happens to be big, tall, and extremely well endowed. Zaan's owner rents out his talents in bed and they begin to see improvement in income. Also, during the next few months, master and slave, discover an underlying emotional attachment to each other. If all this was not enough, slave and master manage to alienate not only one of the wealthiest man in Rome but also Lucius' former best friend. Without realizing what is afoot, they are taken advantage of by their previously unknown enemies. During a horrible luncheon, all comes to a head when the two are drugged, and their host & former friend, take advantage of them. Yet that was not the end. Zaan is a warrior. That night he brings retribution to their enemies. Then Zaan admits what he has done, Lucius recognizes they have to leave Rome. Because his uncle serves in the Legion near the Danube, the young patrician decides to head north. Lucius and Zaan sneak out of the city before their enemies can retaliate. A month and 700 miles later, when they are a day away from the legion's encampment, warriors from across the river surprise them. The bigger surprise is that the warriors are from Zaan's tribe. Now the shoe is on the other foot. The Roman is the prisoner of the tribe. The king orders the Roman taken to the Hut of Retribution and punished for his enslavement and abuse of Zaan, even though Zaan admits he enjoyed the relationship and begs for no punishment. Zaan then takes Lucius for punishment, and at the hut, the two finally admit their deep feelings. Returning to the village, they learn the woodland priest demands vengeance in the name of the god. Their final acts unveil the deep love the two have developed during their time as Roman Master and Barbarian Slave as well as Roman Captive and Barbarian Master.
