The Montagnard People in the Indochina Wars, 1945-1991

Michael A. Eggleston
4.9/5 (29463 ratings)
Description:This history tells the story of the Montagnards, the mountain people of Indochina from the end of World War II into the 21st Century. They are ethinic minorities that live in the Central Highlands of Vietnam where they represented the majority of the population during the Vietnam war. The Montagnards remain a suppressed and exploited minority. Today, the conflict between the Montagnards and the government of Vietnam continues. The Montagnards were loyal fighters alongside U.S. forces and fought against the North Vietnamese, the Viet Cong, and sometimes against the Saigon regime because it exploited them. Their FULRO movement sought autonomy for the Montagnard tribes. FULRO started before the United States became involved in Vietnam’s war and continued long after the fall of South Vietnam and Cambodia in 1975. The end of Saigon’s war did not stop the autonomy movement which continues today. Many of the Montagnards fled Vietnam when they were abandoned by the U. S. in 1975. Thanks to U. S. Army Special Forces veterans and many others, hundreds of Montagnards were evacuated to the United States following the war where they live and thrive today. In order to place their history into prospective, the entire conflict is summarized including key battles that involved Montagnard troops including their uprisings against the South Vietnamese government. This history compiles the histories of many Vietnam historians and the recollections of the author and others who interacted with the Montagnard people during the war in Vietnam who interacted with the Montagnard people. It is in chronological order providing an overall summary of the war followed by the Montagnard and Special Forces involvement in it, year by year until the fall of the Saigon regime to the North Vietnamese Army in 1975. From then forward it describes the continuing conflict between the mountain people and the communist government of Vietnam. Over the last forty years the U. S. government has occasionally addressed the plight of the Montagnard people in Vietnam including Congressional hearings which produced very little effect. In 2019, the Trump administration announced plans to deport Montagnards living in the United States without any details. This amounts to another U. S. government betrayal of the mountain people. It is intended that this book may assist in ending any attempt to deport Montagnards.Michael A.
