I manipulate the lines, punctuation,and in some cases, the tense of a word, changing “breaking”to “break,” for an example, but otherwise the wordswithin each poem are as they fall within Kerouac’s Novel.What gets me about these poems and narratives is the physical realness of their language, the feeling of rest in “there”-ness. A bird “…hops next to me on the bench / and stares up with one brown eye…” (p. 71) When a poem says, “…We were ghost, breath, and wind all at once…” (p. 72), I believe it, chuckle and at the same time realize. In the 1970s I saw kids my age try Zen, with one of Alan Watts’ Zen guides propped open with a Buddha statue on the carpet in front of where they were sitting. It was worth doing even if they grew tired of trying not to try. “…Farewell, Saint Teresa…” (p. 12). Was St. Teresa’s idea of “perfection” a telic misdirection? Is a desired destination really part of the anchored reality of things? When I read Kerouac’s Dharma Bums, it seemed like K’s narrator viewed Japhy Ryder’s contemplative rites with a mix of admiration and amusement. As added ingredients to the telling, he tossed in old sandwiches, car rides and sleeping bags: the reality of ascending a mountain. Beat honesty gives contemplation a boost. I see it in The Bastard Children of Dharma Bums too.
